Alternative to Incarceration

The Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives (DPCA) funds and oversees a variety of pretrial services and correctional alternative programs throughout New York State, often referred to as Alternative to Incarceration or ATI programs.

As part of the Alternative to Incarceration Program, local courts may require non-violent offenders to perform community service as part of their sentence.  The courts will establish a finite amount of community hours the defendant must work as “payment” for the harm caused by their criminal behavior.  These individuals are required to perform labor at the discretion of the Sheriff each Saturday and Sunday for a definite period of time.

The Sheriff's Corrections Division is responsible for scheduling and supervising the work details, which may range from:

* Collecting trash along highways and other public areas
* General landscape work, such as raking leaves or clearing brush
* Exterior and interior painting
* General maintenance work, such as stripping and waxing floors; cleaning; washing windows
* General laboring

Local Government agencies and non-profit organizations within Tioga County may utilize this work crew upon request.  All requests are subject to approval by the Sheriff's Office and the availability of the work crews.

To request work by the ATI crew, contact Corrections Officer Roy Schreiner at (607) 687-8463.
